Companion Therapy® Laser System

Good Morning America’s 2009 Pet Product of the Year!

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. At The Country Vet, we use a class IV laser unit to apply photo stimulation therapy (electromagnetic radiation with red and infrared spectrum) over pets’ injuries and lesions. The laser stimulates healing and pain relief in the tissues. The Country Vet uses two types of lasers:

1. Surgical laser for cutting tissues

2. Therapeutic laser for healing tissues

Our therapeutic laser unit, the subject of this article, is called the Companion Therapy Laser system. It is a class IV laser unit that’s the most powerful therapeutic laser available. In fact, the Companion Therapy Laser system was recognized as one of the World’s Best Veterinary Products of 2009 by ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Many health practitioners use laser units that penetrate less than one inch. However, this only superficially illuminates the skin and is thus only able to heal superficial lesions. The Companion Laser has adjustable power and can penetrate up to 7 inches.

Benefits of the Companion Therapy Laser system include:

  • Pain relief
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Accelerated tissue repair and cell growth
  • Improved circulation by stimulation and formulation of new
  • Increased cellular metabolic activity
  • Reduced fibrous tissue formation
  • Improved nerve function by eliciting regeneration
  • Accelerated wound healing
  • Stimulated immune system
  • Stimulated acupuncture points that provide needle-less acupuncture within seconds
  • What types of injuries does laser therapy treat?

The majority of cases I use laser therapy for are acute disc injuries to the spine or ligaments, chronic arthritic pain, and unresponsive local infection (e.g. chronic ear and anal gland infections). Results are impressive. Nearly 80 percent of patients show significant improvement after two to four treatments.

What can my pet and I expect during a therapeutic laser treatment?

In our experience, laser treatment therapy is relaxing. Pets often have increased salivation and reduced pulse/respiration rates-indicators of relaxation. The laser wand, which is slowly passed over the treatment area, never touches the pet’s body. Each procedure lasts 10 to 15 minutes. I perform the initial treatment with the pet owner present. Follow-up treatments are administered by our veterinary nurses.

How many laser therapy treatments will my pet need?

Chronic problems are usually treated up to two times per week for two weeks. Thereafter, one to two more treatments once a week is typical. Some pets may need one treatment per month after the initial treatments are completed.

What are the goals of therapeutic laser therapy?

  • Provide relief from pain and inflamation
  • Restore range of motion or function
  • Reduce or eliminate medications
  • Give pets a higher-quality of life

How much does laser therapy cost?

Costs range between $65.00 to $75.00 per session, depending upon how many sites are treated. However, pet owners can buy a bundle of sessions in order to save money. See our Specials page for details on the what type of “Cold Laser Package” we offer.

Can therapeutic laser therapy be used on humans?

Dr. Codington has the following personal experience with cold laser therapy: “I have experienced the healing power of laser therapy. Late last year, after injuring my wrist, I was unable to hold a pen or perform surgery. After several X-rays and an MRI, I was diagnosed with a torn ligament and meniscal tear. My doctor recommended surgery with six-weeks off from work to recover. Although I had been in significant pain for two months with splints and medication, I began treating my wrist with the Companion Laser. After three treatments, I was pain-free and able to use my wrist again. Naturally, after successfully treating over 300 pets and experiencing a miraculous result with my own injury, I am an avid supporter of therapeutic laser therapy.”
